Special needs nonprofit cited for failure to provide safe workplace

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has issued a citation to a nonprofit that provides support to adults with special needs and proposed $11,641 in penalties after investigators found the company failed to provide a safe workplace for its employees.

An OSHA investigation found that Billings, Montana-based Resource, Support & Development Inc. employees suffered head, neck and torso injuries after being assaulted by residents with histories of violent behavior. The agency cited the company for one serious violation for failing to furnish a workplace free from recognized hazards, OSHA said Friday in a statement.

“All employers have a legal responsibility to provide a safe workplace,” Art Hazen, OSHA area office director in Billings, said in the statement. “This employer should have monitored and assessed the workplace to ensure employees were properly protected and trained.”

Resource, Support & Development Inc. could not be immediately reached for comment.
